If your question is not answered here, send a note to hello@withvr.app or see the full documentation.

Do I need technical experience?

No. The web app runs in your browser with nothing to download or install. If you are also using a VR headset, you will need to download the Therapy withVR app onto the headset. Every new user is walked through that process in a live training session.

Can I try it before subscribing?

Yes. The actual software is shown on a video call - not a demo version. You see exactly what you will be working with before you commit to anything.

What VR headset do I need?

Any Meta Quest headset - Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, or Quest Pro. The Quest 3S starts at approximately $350 USD / €350 EUR and is the most common choice. Headsets are purchased directly from Meta or your preferred retailer; withVR does not sell hardware.

Do I need WiFi?

Yes - a standard WiFi connection is needed for both the laptop and the VR headset. One important note: enterprise WiFi networks like eduroam are not compatible with Meta Quest headsets. A personal mobile hotspot or guest WiFi network works perfectly. Full network and firewall details are on the Compatibility page.

What languages are supported?

Therapy withVR supports 59 languages with 52 avatar voice combinations. Avatars can speak and respond in the language you choose - powered by Google Text-to-Speech.

Is it HIPAA and GDPR compliant?

Therapy withVR is GDPR compliant with all data hosted in Frankfurt, Germany. For HIPAA, the platform is designed so that Protected Health Information (PHI) does not enter the system - no client names, diagnoses, or health records are collected or stored. A FERPA agreement is available for school districts.

Is any audio or video recorded during sessions?

Not by Therapy withVR. The software does not record or store any audio or video - nothing is captured on our end. If you want to record a session for your own notes, research, or review, Meta Quest headsets have built-in capture tools that let you do this directly from the device; recordings stay under your control. Profile names are encrypted with AES. Only withVR has access to the infrastructure - no third parties.

Can I pause my subscription if life gets in the way?

Yes. Subscriptions can be paused for up to six months by arrangement - for parental leave, sabbatical, institutional budget freezes, or other reasons. Every request is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Contact hello@withvr.app to discuss.

Is Therapy withVR a medical device?

No. Therapy withVR is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, or provide therapy. It is a tool used by qualified professionals within their own scope of practice.

Is the software evidence-based?

Therapy withVR is built on peer-reviewed research and has been used in published studies, including randomized controlled pilot trials. The underlying design principles are informed by 100+ peer-reviewed studies in the Evidence Hub. The first scoping review of immersive VR in the field (Nudelman et al. 2026, AJSLP) maps the wider field across two decades of research. A formal large-scale RCT of Therapy withVR itself has not yet been conducted - the closest framing is "informed by peer-reviewed research" and "used in published research."

Can I use it with children?

Yes - Therapy withVR has been used with children as young as 5. Meta Quest headsets are officially for ages 10+, so children under 10 can only use the Web App. See the documentation for specific setup guidance for children.

Does Therapy withVR work for people who use more than one language?

Yes. The avatar voices can be set to any of 59 supported languages per avatar. A session can include avatars speaking different languages. The Web App interface itself is also available in all 59 languages.

Is Therapy withVR only for stuttering? I work with aphasia / TBI / voice / anxiety.

No - stuttering is one population among many. Therapy withVR is used with aphasia, traumatic brain injury cognitive-communication difficulties, voice (including gender-affirming voice work), selective mutism, developmental language disorder, and with psychologists for social and presentation anxiety. See Scenarios by caseload for starting-point guidance per caseload, and the Evidence Hub for relevant peer-reviewed studies.

I'm a psychologist, not a speech-language professional. Can I use Therapy withVR?

Yes. Psychologists and psychotherapists use Therapy withVR for graded exposure work on social anxiety, presentation anxiety, and public-speaking fear. The software is a clinician-controlled practice tool, not a speech-specific product. See For Psychologists for fit-specific scenarios and the Evidence Hub for relevant literature.

Can my university, hospital, or district pay by invoice or purchase order?

Yes. Institutional billing via invoice or PO is available for universities, hospitals, schools, and districts. Email hello@withvr.app with your vendor-onboarding requirements and we will work with your procurement team.

Is there an academic / research license?

Yes - custom pricing is available for research use, including multi-year bundles, multi-seat licenses, and quotes on letterhead for grant submissions. If your grant deadline is under 72 hours, say "Urgent grant quote" in your email subject and include the deadline for a same-business-day response.

Can I export session data for research analysis?

Yes. Session event data (avatars used, emotions triggered, sentences sent, sounds played, timestamps) can be exported on request. No audio or video is captured by the software. Exports contain no identifying information beyond the profile IDs you create. Ask during research onboarding for the export format.

I don't have a therapist. Can I still use Therapy withVR?

Yes, with one important detail. Therapy withVR is a two-person tool by design: one person is in the VR headset, and another person sits at a laptop and controls the scene. You cannot use it alone. The laptop partner does not have to be a clinician - it can be a family member, partner, friend, peer from a stuttering or voice community, or volunteer. The laptop side takes about 10-15 minutes to learn in the live training call. Working with a qualified speech-language professional is usually better when possible, but Therapy withVR can still help when that is not available, as long as you have someone willing to run the laptop side with you. See For Individuals for more.

My loved one has aphasia / stuttering / another communication difference. Can we use this at home?

Possibly. The best outcome usually involves a speech-language professional - see For Families. If no professional is available, Therapy withVR can still help at home, but with one important detail: the software is designed for two people. Your loved one wears the headset; you (or another family member) sit at a laptop and control the scene. It cannot be used alone. Email hello@withvr.app to discuss your specific situation.

Where will Gareth be speaking next? I'd like to meet in person.

Current and recent events are listed on the Events page. If you plan to attend one, email hello@withvr.app ahead of the event with "Meeting at [event]" in the subject and we will arrange time to meet and try the software in person.

What happens if a clinician on my team leaves? Can I reassign the seat?

Yes. Seats on the Team plan can be reassigned to another clinician. There is no per-clinician minimum lock-in. Contact hello@withvr.app for reassignment details.

What is your age guidance for children?

Meta Quest headsets have their own minimum-age requirements set by Meta (currently 10+ with a parent-managed account; see Meta's parent guidance for current details). Therapy withVR follows Meta's device policy - if Meta permits the headset for a given age, the software works. For younger children, the Web App can be used on a laptop screen without the headset. Parental or guardian consent is recommended for any use with someone under 18.
